Christmas Lunch and Kaleidoscope at The Grove Community Centre - 25th of November

PS Art Space is a project space for the experience of contemporary art which presents a curated program of exhibitions and events by Australian and international artists. Sensitively restored, the heritage listed building is located in the heart of Fremantle’s historic West End precinct, PSAS has become one of Perth’s most exciting and experimental platform to experience contemporary culture.

Edith Cowan University student Simone Strydom invites us to learn about her PhD project with the Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research. Simone’s work is solely focused on the influence of light quality (i.e. the different colours of light) on seagrass growth and reproduction. 

This research is fundamental because dredge plumes not only reduce the amount of light reaching seagrasses, but the spectral quality of light often shifts towards the yellow region of the visible spectrum. Yellow light is not as useful for photosynthesis compared to red and blue wavelengths of light, as it does not directly correspond with chlorophyll absorption (which is crucial for photosynthesis and plant growth). So how does this altered light colour affect seagrasses? Sadly, we know very little about this, even though land plants have demonstrated that it can induce various responses throughout their life cycle (i.e. seed germination, seedling survival, adult growth, onset of flowering, fruit development, etc.). 

Simone set out to answer this question using an aquarium based experiment where she grew seagrass under different coloured lights. This experiment provides our first glimpse into the growth response of a seagrass species to individual light spectra. The seagrass Halophila ovalis grew significantly less under yellow light compared to full-spectrum light. This may have implications for dredging, considering that light under plumes is generally yellow-shifted; however, management has only considered light reduction as a major driver of stress with regards to light under dredging plumes.

Surreal and ultra-sensory The Secret Garden by Swedish artists Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg opens up a netherworld of strange delights and encounters.In their immersive landscapes, sculpture, light, sound and film mix to dazzling effect as gallery visitors are thrust into the mysterious worlds of feverish dreams, psychedelic sunsets and expanding universes.

This exhibition is the first time that Djurberg and Berg’s work has been seen in Western Australia and, in addition, features a survey of the savagely humorous claymation films that first brought these artists into the international spotlight.

The CSA hosts regular 'Kaleidoscope' events which give the opportunity to members to share their work and stories. Recently the Colour Society was invited on a cultural tour of China with CSA member Huilin Sun. This even focused on all that was seen and experienced on this trip, as well as a Chinese Calligraphy Workshop with Huilin and a Chinese Tea Tasting with tea expert Gary Sigley.
